ROMAN MOSAICS
Mosaic floors remind us of the opulence of the Roman lifestyle. Marble and other hardstones were used to depict images from Greek and Roman mythology.
The stones (tesserae) were cut using a special hammer and upturned chisel (hardie) embedded into a wooden block.
The average size of the tersserae was 8-12mm. Just one square metre of mosaic floor, for example, would take 8,000 - 10,000 pieces to complete.
Accurate copies of original Roman Mosaics are shown below and are now available for sale.
I also take private commissions, ranging from single fragment pieces to large floors, floor details and swimming pools.
